A fresh stain protects your deck and brings the wood back to life
What deck staining does

A fresh stain protects your deck and brings the wood back to life

Florida sun and humidity are hard on outdoor wood. A proper clean, stain and seal restores the color, guards against rot, mildew and UV fading, and keeps your deck safe and beautiful for years.

Our three-step restoration brings tired wood back to life. First we treat any mildew and pressure-wash the deck to strip off dirt and failing finish. Next we sand the surface to open the grain so the new stain soaks in and lasts, using stand-up sanders on the boards and detail tools on railings and stairs, and we replace any minor rotted boards along the way. Finally we apply a premium penetrating stain and sealer matched to your wood, with extra attention to railings, stairs and end grain. The result is even color, water that beads off, and a deck you are proud to entertain on.

  • Decks, docks, pergolas, railings and stairs
  • Deep clean and brighten before any stain goes on
  • Premium penetrating stains and sealers built for Florida
Before we stain

Four things we get right on every deck

01

Choosing the right stain

Transparent, semi-transparent or solid, each wears and looks different. We help you pick the color and opacity that fits your deck and how you use it.

02

Cleaning and brightening

We strip old finish, kill mildew and brighten the wood so the new stain absorbs evenly and the grain comes through.

03

Repairs and prep

We reset popped nails and screws, sand rough spots and secure loose boards so the surface is smooth, safe and ready.

04

Sealing for Florida weather

A quality sealer sheds water and blocks UV, the two things that age a Florida deck fastest.

What we do

Deck and wood services we offer

Deck Staining

Even, long-lasting color on decks of any size, in the opacity that fits your wood and style.

Sealing & Waterproofing

A premium sealer that sheds water and blocks UV so your deck lasts longer between refreshes.

Cleaning & Brightening

Pressure-washing plus a brightener to lift dirt, mildew and gray so the wood looks new again.

Repairs & Board Replacement

Loose boards, popped fasteners and rough spots fixed so the deck is safe and smooth before we stain.

Railings & Stairs

The details that get the most wear, cleaned, stained and sealed to match the rest of the deck.

Pergolas & Docks

Outdoor wood beyond the deck, pergolas, docks and gates, protected from Florida sun and water.

Our process

A systematic approach that delivers the job we promised

A clear, repeatable process is how we keep quality high on every project. Here is how your deck job goes.

  1. 1

    Wash and brighten

We pressure-wash the deck, kill mildew and brighten the wood so stain absorbs evenly.

  2. 2

    Prep and repair

We reset fasteners, sand rough spots, secure loose boards and protect nearby surfaces.

  3. 3

    Stain

We apply a premium penetrating stain in the color and opacity you chose, worked into the grain.

  4. 4

    Seal

A quality sealer locks it in so water beads off and the color holds against the sun.

  5. 5

    Inspect

We walk the finished deck with you to make sure every board meets our standard, and yours.

Deck staining FAQs

Is the estimate really free?
Yes. We provide free, no-obligation deck staining estimates with no sales pressure. Book online or call and we will take a look, talk through your goals, and give you a clear price.
How often should I re-stain my deck in Florida?
Most decks in Northeast Florida do best with a fresh stain and seal every two to three years. Strong sun, humidity and rain wear finishes faster here than up north. We will tell you honestly where yours stands.
Do you clean the deck before staining?
Always. We pressure-wash and brighten to remove dirt, mildew and gray, then let it dry. Stain only bonds well to a clean, sound surface.
Transparent, semi-transparent or solid stain, which is best?
It depends on the wood and the look you want. Transparent shows the most grain but needs refreshing sooner; solid lasts longest and hides wear. We will walk you through the trade-offs during your estimate.
How long before I can use my deck again?
It varies with the product and weather, but most decks are ready for foot traffic within a day and furniture soon after. We will give you a clear timeline for your project.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. Hillis Brothers has been fully licensed and insured since 1992 and is a BBB-accredited business. You are in good hands from the first call to the final coat.
